Northern Lights

In 2014, I met another photographer during a photoshoot in northern Sweden, where I was living at the time. We both really wanted to see and shoot the northern lights. So we booked a four-day trip to Tromsø, in the far north of Norway.
It was only 11 years ago, but back then photographing the aurora wasn't as simple as pointing your iPhone at the sky. You needed a tripod, long exposures, patience... and quite a bit of luck. And aurora forecasts weren't a thing back then either.
But as it turned out, luck was on our side.
All four nights we had clear skies and incredibly strong aurora activity. One night while chasing the lights, the sky suddenly started to light up. Green danced above our heads, like one of those retro Windows 98 screensavers
We pulled over, walked down to the shoreline, and then…to make it even more magical, a pod of whales appeared in the bay, slowly making their way through the dark water, exhaling clouds of mist into the air beneath the dancing lights.
